Ad Group and Ad Distribution Weight

Learn how to "Weight" your ad groups and ads to better optimize your campaigns and get better results.

Weighting determines how often an ad group or ad is shown in relation to the other ad groups or ads. You can optimize your ads as a group or individually by going to the “Placement Details” and clicking “Edit Ad Group” or “Edit Ad”. Change the distribution weight and save. You can also turn ads on or off from the “Placement Details” page.

To set the weight of the ad group, you must enter a value into the “Distribution Weight” field. Ad groups with a higher weight will be shown more than ad groups with a lower weight.

For Example:

  • Ad Group 1, Weight 1
  • Ad Group 2, Weight 3

Out of 1,000 impressions, Ad Group 1 will be served 250 times and Ad Group 2 will be served 750 times (because this example shows a 3:1 ratio).

To set the weight of the ad, you must enter a value into the “Distribution Weight” field. Ads with a higher weight will be shown first (‘first’ would mean the topmost spot or the leftmost spot, depending on the shape of the placement). If two ads have the same weight, they will be split tested.

Example:

  • Ad 1, Weight 1
  • Ad 2, Weight 2
  • Ad 3, Weight 2
  • Ad 4, Weight 3

In this example, Ad 4 will always appear first because it has the highest weight, and Ad 1 will always appear last because it has the lowest weight. The middle ad in the placement will be split tested, since both Ad 2 and Ad 3 have the same weight. The rotation between Ad 2 and Ad 3 is actually another form of split testing.
